This project employed a content-generating process developed by Danielle Davis (MICA, MFA 09). She has created a process that gives individuals a way to generate and make things by way of open exploration and design making. We followed her recipe and proposed a final form that took the shape of a product, set of components, publication(s), or anything else appropriate for the time allotted for the project. We documented our development as a process book which is demonstrated below.

CHOOSING THE SEED

This seed stood out to me because I was curious about it’s texture and pattern.

Minimalist abstract line illustration set on a plain white background. An irregular, organic oval-like silhouette is filled with a textured hatch pattern composed of thousands of tiny, randomly oriented black dash lines, creating a dense weave effect within the shape.
A page from a dot-grid sketchpad filled with numbered graphite pencil concept sketches. Sections 1, 2, and 3 show progression sequences where abstract shapes, line hatches, concentric rings, and fluid curves transition into stylized geometric faces and figures. Handwritten notes on the bottom right side include the word Futuristic and ideas such as Space meeting, world leaders, personalities, Social media post?, and zine?.

INSPIRATION FROM SEED

I saw faces in the pattern of my seed and drew my own versions of them while also implementing other geometric shapes and patterns.

PUSHING THE IDEA

Since I made characters I started playing around with giving them personalities while also brainstorming instances where a personality would be showcased.

A page from a dot-grid notebook filled with pencil character concept sketches and handwritten notes. At the top right, a square-faced geometric character is described as 4 light years old, can be confused with a dog, and having anger issues. On the left, a curvy, fluid profile drawing is paired with notes listing 300,000 light years old, very wise, and hates sarcasm, cellphones, and frozen food. Additional handwritten text includes phrases like protector of all space, Intergalactic dating, and Chomp Chomp 5000.

TAKING IT DIGITAL

Next, I started taking my characters digital and traced over some real life people because I had an idea that some of my new characters would be world leaders in my space society and I wanted to base them off of real people to add tension.

A black-and-white minimalist digital vector illustration depicting a portrait in a cubist or geometric style. The head, hair, eyebrows, eyes, nose, lips, cheeks, and necktie are formed entirely of sharp-angled polygons, rectangles, and triangles, set against a plain white background.
A black-and-white cubist line illustration depicting a woman's portrait in three-quarter view. Heavy, sharp-angled black lines form her long, jagged hair framing a face constructed from geometric shapes, featuring stylized eyebrows, angular eyelids, a blocky nose, and contoured lips on a solid white background.

FINE TUNING

I added a space themed color palette and replaced the simple line work with abstract geometric shapes.

A bold, pop-art style geometric vector illustration depicting a portrait of a woman against a flat lime green background. Her face is composed of sharp, angled purple and magenta polygons, framed by vibrant pink hair rendered in blocky geometric shapes. She features yellow angular eyes with dark diamond pupils, light pink eyebrows, cyan diamond earrings, and a yellow-outlined mouth.
A bold, pop-art style geometric vector illustration depicting a caricature portrait of a man against a flat light cyan background. His face is constructed from angular orange and pink polygons, topped with blocky, pale yellow hair. Features include pale yellow rectangular eyebrows, dark blue square eyes set in pink sockets, pink cheek triangles, a puckered pink and blue mouth, and a light blue collar with a dark brown tie below.
A geometric pixel-art style vector illustration depicting a stylized robot or character head set against a solid pale yellow background. Constructed from teal, purple, and dark blue blocky shapes, the character features a central head with pink rectangular eyes inside dark sockets, a dark blue nose and mouth line, rectangular side ears, and three dark blue square blocks stacked vertically above as an antenna.

THE FINAL PRODUCT

My final decision was to create a dating app that could accommodate my new futuristic space characters in an interesting way. I added tension by basing some of the design of my character design on famous world leaders. My thought process was that it would be ironic to live in a future where world leaders being seen participating in a dating app was a normal occurrence.

The center phone displays a splash screen reading Find love, Intergalactically. with a crescent moon logo and colorful character cards floating in deep blue space. The flanking phones show profile views with user stats, prompt answers, action buttons for liking or passing, and avatar portraits featuring geometric alien artwork.
